Instruction Technology Support and Academic Computing will be performing server upgrades after the Spring 2004 semester is complete. Students will not notice any changes until the start of the summer semester, June 7, 2004. At that time, everyone’s login and email passwords will be set back to their student id numbers (social security numbers.) However, your login name and email addresses will remain the same.

We STRONGLY recommend that you backup all of the files on your user drive to disk or CD-R and export your GroupWise address book before the upgrades begin. You should also forward any emails you need to retain to an off-campus account such as your home ISP, yahoo or hotmail. Your user drive files will be backed up by our department, before the upgrade begins. However, emails and address books will not be able to be transferred in the upgrade and will be inaccessible through the new system.

Once the upgrades are performed, students will have the same passwords for their network, dial-up and email logins. Students will not longer be required to change these passwords. Should you need to change your password, please contact a lab administrator for assistance.

Information on how to backup your GroupWise address book can be found on our Help Desk website or by clicking on the link below: http://acs.nicholls.edu/its/helpdesk/stu/gwhelp.html.

Any questions or concerns regarding this upgrade can be directed to:

Instructional Technology Support has implemented a virus filter on all incoming and outgoing GroupWise emails. If any users are experiencing difficulty with their GroupWise email account it could be due to the following reasons:
  • Outbound Email – If a student attempts to send out a GroupWise email that contains a virus, the email will not be sent. It will be returned to your inbox with the following error message: “This email contains one or more viruses. Please contact your technical support staff.” Please notify a lab assistant if you attempting to send a message from campus – please identity the computer lab and computer number.
  • Inbound Email – If you have been expecting an email that has not arrived in your GroupWise mailbox, it could be due to a virus that is attached to that email. The new filter will not allow an email with a virus to enter our mailboxes. Please ask the person sending the email to run a virus scan on their computer and resend the message.

Nicholls students can now have access to the wireless Internet. To get access, you must have a valid user account with Academic computing, and fill out a form in the WAC lab to supply the following information:

- Name and user account
- Make and model of laptop
- Brand and standard of wireless card
- Operating system
- MAC address - an internal number that uniquely identifies the wireless card

Upon completion of the above information, access will be active within two working days.

Some general issues to be noted about wireless access at Nicholls:

The general standard is 802.11b, but not all brands of wireless access cards work on our network for that standard. University Computer Services recommends Dell and Enterasys brand cards for the IBM compatible computers and the Airport for the Mac, but others have been tested and found to work. As new technologies emerge, there may be acceptance of those standards.

There is limited availability of hotpoints on campus. To use the wireless network, one must be within the range of a wireless hotpoint (the general range of a hotpoint varies, but is usually less than 100 feet). In general, acceptable signal quality is only within the inside of our four wireless buildings: Peltier, Polk, White, and Powell halls.

There are no guarantees of wireless access in the quad at this time. There are no guarantees that one may roam from hotpoint to hotpoint at this time.

To create the personal web page follow the instructions below:
  • Create a folder named public_html (must be all lower case) on the root of the user directory.
  • Place all files and sub-folders in that directory.
  • To access from the Internet, use your user name in the address. For example, access an HTML file named index from the user acs-tom type http://its.nicholls.edu/~acs-tom/index.html in the address bar.
